Keno’s History

Keno was first played in 200 BC by the Chinese military commander, Cheung Leung who utilized keno as a way to finance his failing army. The metropolis of Cheung was at war, and after some time seemed to be facing national shortage of food with the dramatic drop in supplies. Cheung Leung had to create a rapid fix for the financial disaster and to produce revenue for his military. He, as it follows created the game we now know as keno and it was a fantastic success.

Keno once was known as the White Pigeon Game, because the winning numbers were delivered by pigeons from larger cities to the smaller towns. The lotto ‘Keno’ was brought to America in the 1800s by Chinese migrants who migrated to the US for jobs. In those times, Keno was played with one hundred and twenty numbers.

Today, Keno is most often enjoyed with just 80 numbers in almost all of the US brick and mortar casinos along with net casinos. Keno is largely enjoyed today as a result of the relaxed nature of wagering the game and the basic fact that there are no skills required to play Keno. Regardless of the reality that the chances of coming away with a win are horrible, there is always the hope that you might hit quite big with a tiny gaming investment.

Keno is enjoyed with eighty numbers and 20 numbers are drawn each round. Players of Keno can choose from two to 10 numbers and gamble on them, as much or as little as they are able to. The pay out of Keno is dependent on the bets made and the matching of numbers.

Keno has grown in universal appeal in the US since the end of the 19th century when the Chinese letters were changed with more familiar, American numbers. Lottos were not covered under the laws of gaming in the state of Nevada in Nineteen Thirty One. The casinos renamed the ‘Chinese lottery’ to ‘horse race keno’ employing the idea that the numbers are horses and you want your horses to come in. When a law passed that levied a tax on off track gambling, casinos quickly adjusted the name to ‘Keno’.
